Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich A modern classic that deftly portrays the plight of America’s working-class poor, through the author’s own attempt at scratching out a living in blue-collar America. What she discovers is a culture of desperation, where workers often take multiple low-paying jobs just to keep a roof overhead.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver Moving from suburban Arizona to rural Appalachia, the author and her family spend a year on a diet of locally produced food. Their goal was to get food from so close to home that they knew the person who grew it – which often turned out to be themselves.
